︎ SHORT/ Hélio Volana (1994), sound artist and performer, lives and works in Paris. They benefit from the MIRA 2024 grant from the french institute for a two month residencyMadagascar (January-February 2024). Their work were also welcomed in Residency in various place including National Centers for Musical Creation in France ( Césaré, Reims, FR and La muse en Circuit, Alfortville, FR), and Le BAMP, Brussels, BE.Helio graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Performance from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels, BE, and are studying electroacoustic composition at the Conservatory of Pantin, FR.
Sensitive to the urgencies linking a threatened nature and a fractured society, their work considers sound as a space for porosity. Navigating the disciplinary boundaries of music, visual art, and performance, they have created a body of work that encompasses sound, music, performance, and installation.
Their projects are conceived as immersive hybrid soundscapes, oscillating between realism and dreaminess. The setup primarily revolves around the modular synthesizer and microphones. Hélio works with sound as an expressive material, and their musical gesture explores its roughness, ruggedness, and prominences. The artist pays special attention to sounds typically rejected in the musical process: feedback, buzz, etc.

Héli☼ means the sun in Greek and V☽lana signifies the moon in Malagasy.
Between gender expressions, heritages, and disciplines, Hélio' explores the troubled and in-between zones, the places of retreat that escape categorizations."
